Toxic Chemicals from Hair Care Products Linger, Are Often Inhaled
Hair care products typically contain several potentially harmful chemicals that are easily inhalable and can linger in the air after use, according to a recent study. This leads to a person inhaling 1-17 mg of these chemicals in a single hair-care session at home.
The study was conducted in a residential building and involved different emission experiments designed to mimic actual hair care routines. Not only were chemicals found to accumulate in the air of one room, they also traveled to other rooms and the outdoor environment via the ventilation system.
One of the greatest chemicals of concern identified was D5 siloxane, which has shown numerous adverse effects in animal studies and is often the first or second ingredient listed in hair products. In addition, the researchers found that adding heat to the products increased emissions by 50-310%.
“The best solution is to simply not use these products,” said Nusrat Jung, study author. “I used to use similar products myself to straighten my hair, but after we analyzed the data, it became immediately clear that the best thing I could do to protect my own health was to stop using them.”
Legumes Improve Nutrient Intake, May Lower Cholesterol More Than 10%
Swapping out a small amount of common proteins and/or refined grains for legumes can significantly improve nutrient intake and may lower cholesterol levels by over 10%, a new study has found. This could, in turn, benefit heart health in the long run.
Legumes (also called pulses) include foods like peas, lentils, chickpeas, and beans that are naturally rich in fiber, folate, and minerals. Researchers used the USDA’s dietary modeling approach to estimate the effects of substituting lentils for mostly animal-based proteins and refined grains.
Overall, the findings showed that adding just ¼ cup of pulses in place of common protein foods could increase fiber intake by over 10% and also lower cholesterol by more than 10%. Swapping out 1 oz of refined grains daily for ½ cup of pulses significantly increases fiber, magnesium, copper, and potassium intake.
The study authors believe their results “suggest that encouraging increased pulse consumption may be an effective strategy for improving diet quality and achieving a healthier dietary pattern,” noting that even small to moderate portions of legumes can make a difference.

12 Impressive Benefits of Fennel, Including Less Gas/Bloating!
Fennel is an impressive plant that produces a nutritious bulb, delicious leaves, AND health-boosting edible seeds. All three are rich in antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory compounds, while the bulb is particularly high in bone-boosting calcium. The seeds have long been used to aid digestion and reduce gas and bloating, and fennel oil may help relieve symptoms of menopause as well as menstrual cramps. Fennel as a whole is also great for brain, skin, and eye health. (More)
Irregular Sleep Patterns Linked to Higher Dementia Risk
Many sleep studies have focused on the health effects of the total amount of sleep gotten each night, but few have researched the effects of sleep regularity, meaning how often someone is going to bed and getting up at the same time each day. A recent study altered this trend and found some surprising results: Those with the most irregular sleep patterns may have a 53% higher chance of developing dementia than those with better sleep regularity, regardless of total hours slept. Birth Control Alters Stress Response, May Raise Inflammatory Disease Risk
Using hormonal birth control pills appears to alter the stress response in women, according to some recent research. Contraceptive users processed stress differently at the molecular level and also had a more negative psychological reaction to stress than non-users. In addition, using birth control may increase levels of systemic inflammation in the body, potentially raising the risk of inflammatory diseases, including heart disease and autoimmune disorders. Omega 3s May Slow the Progression of Pulmonary Fibrosis
Omega 3s are healthy fatty acids found abundantly in certain types of fish as well as plant-based foods like nuts and seeds. Though good for everyone, a new study has found that omega 3s could be especially beneficial for patients with pulmonary fibrosis. Those with higher blood levels of omega 3 were more likely to have better lung function than those with lower levels and also went longer on average without needing a transplant. (More)

Everyone with anxiety has different triggers, and learning what they are and how to manage them can really make life better. The human body has about 5 million hair follicles (all of which you are born with), including approximately 100,000 on the head alone. Only a few parts on the outside of your body are not covered with hair – the soles of your feet, the palms of your hands, and the red part of your lips.
